I may get an offer soon for a position in Plano. Can anyone tell me how bad the mosquitoes are? Are their neighboring areas where it's less of a problem (e.g., in Dallas proper)?

Very low tolerance for them (am used to LA, where there's almost none).

Thanks!

Yes, they can be bad, but I believe it depends on how vigilant your neighbors are in combating them. For instance, last night when it was 28 degrees outside, a mosquito got my wife while we sat on the couch.

Mosquitoes are a non issue around here. I lived in Florida for 14 years so that may be why I think that way.

Non issue in West Plano neighborhood I live. Now in Houston is another story, they were biting me all the time when I was living there.

Non-issue? The Dallas area had one of the highest West Nile cases in the country this summer. They were warning people to stay inside in the evenings.

I've lived here for just 2 years and yes mosquitos have been a non issue for me, especially compared to Houston where I lived for 25+ years before. I spend some time in my yard and play golf in all seasons and have not experienced a mosquito bite here. Houston on the other hand, well lets just say those gulf coast mosquitoes loved the taste of my blood apparently, I had issues any time outdoors during warmer months. So it has been a non issue for me.

Sounds like I may be the exception to the rule, but one of the many positives about West Plano vs West Houston is the lack of mosquitoes.

I lived in Dallas for 4 months shy of 25 years and can't remember a summer that I didn't have a ton of bites. Mostly living in Richardson for all those years. When I was pregnant a few years ago, I took the dog for a walk and came home with 17 bites. The dog didn't get another walk that entire summer. I've been in Austin for 4 years now, and they're "better" here, but still around. Whenever I go to visit my parents in Carrollton, bites bites and more bites. I thought I ate enough garlic to make them leave me alone, but that doesn't work... the drought in Austin is what has kept them to a lower count here. Hopefully the freeze we had this morning is killing any eggs for next year.

Are you going to work outside in the evenings? Allergic or have issues with Off? Walking your dog outside? The DFW area in general has a lot of outside bugs, and mosquitoes are very common in the summer. This past year was terrible, but also not that much worse than normal.

I chuckled as I read the last response as I just wanted to ask, would you really turn down a job because of an insect? If the opportunity is there, go for it. I'm allergic to ants, but they're all over the place. I still chose to go outside and play with my kids. We stay away from ants. You can spray OFF or wear Garlic or whatever people do to protect themselves from mosquitoes, but don't allow this tiny insect make your decision for you.

I lived in Plano for 15 years... They were only an issue for me if I was around water. If there are no lakes, ponds, streams or nasty swimming pools near you, you should be fine.
