I lived in your neck of the woods for a few years and understand you're feelings of Kent - the 405 S-curves can be painful as well as the other issues. So, wherever there are great school districts (Plano ISD), the housing (houses, condos, apartments) will always have a relative higher cost because families are willing the pay the premium (yes, even apartments). So, I would suggest renting something either further out (McKinney, Wylie - ala eastern part of Issaquah) or in an older established area ~ others could recommend parts of Garland or Richardson (ala Lake City/Shoreline) that are not in the Plano ISD). Living further out would impact your drive while you're looking for work (and the traffic on 635 will feel just like the 405). When you find a job, you can move if the commute is too bad. Basically, yes, come to Texas, work in Plano if you get a job there, but don't pay the premium for the Plano schools if you don't need to. There are lots of great areas in North Dallas.

Plano for a single person with not much money...not the place I'd pick.
