Hi,

I am a first time home buyer and I am looking into buying a new home. Which among the three builders - Darling, Conventory or Highland is better. Also, please let me know if you know about their discounts on new homes.

Thank you all so much.

I have also been looking into the area.

My sense from reading other posts is that Highland and Darling are highly rated builders, and it seems the homes available from Highland in Riverside village are slightly more expensive.

We personally liked the denser neighborhoods of La Villita, but since the ones selling there right now seem almost as expensive as the newer Riverside homes, I guess the latter is the way to go.

This may be diverting the topic, but since you are also looking in the same place - I was recently spooked to hear from someone that Las Colinas sits on the Barnett shale and could be open to fracking nearby. Have you heard this or have any opinion on it? Thanks.

Rarely do builders offer discounts on new houses. It sets a new price for that model. What you can negotiate are upgrades. But your buyer's agent should help you with that. You need an agent!

I live in La Villita. The closest drilling is at DFW Airport and as far as I know the Airport and west is where the Barnett Shale is located.

OP... those 3 builders are all good. I have my preferences but they each build a different style of home.

Thanks.

If you don't mind, can you state your preferences- and why?
I know that will be just one opinion but it will help some of us who are very new to these things.

The best 2 (IMO) are Highland and Darling and each is building a different type of product. Their quality, warranty and service are all some of the best in the business. I've had about 5-8 people build with both these builders in 2012 and all have turned out well. I currently have 2 Highland homes being built and 1 Darling in different areas.

In Riverside, Highland is building more of a "family" type home where Darling is more of a "designer" type home. The price per sq ft for a Darling will usually be higher. The Highland homes will be on larger lots.

Coventry is good also but since they are out of Houston they don't do as much in the area. BTW, I own a Darling home in La Villita. They did a great job in that subdivision. Highland did not build there.
