Saks Fifth Avenue is leaving the Galleria; Belk is moving in | Biz Beat Blog

This can't be good news for Galleria.

Its not a surprise. Their stores are not profitable any more and they closed quite a few since recession including one in Austin and one in Plano. They were trying to limit to one store per metroplex. Their focus in on Off 5th stores now as they are less expensive to run. Who needs over priced luxury goods anyways. Once who really do they shop in London and Paris.

Sad... In the area of the Carolinas that we moved from, Belk is a very nice full-line dept store (but obviously no Saks). However, I wonder what quality of store/merchandise this new Belk location will bring to the Galleria? Belk outside the core Carolina markets is DECIDEDLY middle of the road.

If you ask me, we have way too many malls and a disposable mentality.

This is very sad for the Galleria. I've been to a Belk and it reminds me of a Kohl's department store. I didn't see this one coming. I think Saks had a tough time competing with Neiman Marcus in the Dallas luxury market. Neiman's has a very loyal customer base, and it's hard to keep customers in a slow economy, when there are only so many people who can afford high end retail. I've never seen a Neiman Marcus store close down, and it's because their repeat customers will only shop at particular store and with a particular sales representative they have an excellent sales model, and you can't compete with them in Dallas. Saks fifth avenue was one of the original anchors at the Dallas Galleria, so it's terrible they're going down after 30 years. Their employees are well paid professionals, those professional level jobs won't be replaced by Belk's staffing. Looks bad for the Galleria, eerily similar to Valley View

To put it in perspective this is like a pappadeaux getting replaced by a Long John silver's.

Personally, Saks stuff is way too pricey for me, even at the outlet stores. Belk at least carries Tommy Bahama, Clinique, and other nice brands, so its much better than Kohls.

I actually thought there was also a Saks (along with Niemans) at Northpark... So the ONLY Saks in the entire Metroplex is closing.... Sadder still.

There used to be a Lord & Taylor at Northpark, where Barneys is now, but never a Saks.
