Probably moving to Dallas next couple weeks. Looking for apartments. I work from home, so can reside anywhere. My requirements are no (or minimal - I know it's Dallas) bugs, safety and no minimal worry about car break-ins, etc., and quiet. Everything else is of secondary importance to me.

How clean do I have to be to avoid roaches? I mean, I won't say there aren't ANY crumbs, but I've not met anyone recently who keeps a place cleaner than I do. I don't really cook at all.

Would love to get everyone's thoughts on a good area - or even better, a good complex to live at. I just am tired sorting through the garbage on apartmentratings. All I can figure is that either what they write is true - which is bad - or it means the people living in the complex are spiteful enough to write the lies - which is also bad.

Just so confused.

Help!!

I've never had a bug problem at any of the apartments I've lived in, or vehicle break-ins. If your living in Dallas proper it's good to live in a building with a parking garage. It protects your car from the elements and it keeps you safe, but always lock your car and never leave anything valuable in your car. Most apartments in Uptown and Oak lawn have valet trash, so I never have trash in my apartment long. My sink is too small to leave dishes in it, and I'm too OCD to do that anyway. I don't cook much. It's cheaper and easier for me not to. If the apartment has a 50% favorable rating it should be ok. Just carefully read the reviews, and make sure the people aren't complaining about maintenance, or energy efficiency. There can be big utility bill differences, depending on how old or well built a place is.

What type of neighborhood are you looking for? Budget?

Budget-wise, I'm willing to go up to $650 if it's nice. Neighborhoods I really don't care about. As long as it's safe, quiet, and free from excess bug problems, I'm good. But that's a great point about energy efficiency. Will make that a point to check. Where did you live specifically, if you don't mind me asking? If you'd rather not post, you can PM me?

$650 might be tough in some areas. That's what I was paying back in 2007 before demand for rentals rose. I think living on anything but the first floor will help with the bug issue. I lived on a 1st floor unit once and the crickets were horrible. And we got june bugs too. Yuck. I don't know how they got in. When I was on a 2nd or 3rd floor I never had a problem.

You may want to think about a roomate. That's going to be a really hard budget, but here's a few places that look safe:
