This is an on-again, off-again hot topic. At times in the past few years, we've heard about everything from enhanced Machine-gaming at Lone Star Park, to building an actual casino at the Reunion Arena location.

There was also talk of the Gaylord Texan Resort in Grapevine having been built with a conversion to a casino property in mind.

So, huge revenue vs. the downsides to local gaming. What's your take?

I'm all for it. I know so many people (myself and family included) who take the trip up to Choctaw or Winstar on a monthly basis. It's stupid to be sending our money to Oklahoma when it could be spent in our own state.

The people who have a problem with it need to get their heads out of the sand and realize that it makes good economic sense to allow it.

I'm for it. People who want to gamble will take their money out of state.

If you're morally opposed to gambling, nobody is forcing you to head to a casino.

I don't care either way, long as I don't have to pay for any of it.

Not to make this political, but we all know Republicans control the state government. Rick Perry is a staunch opponent of legalizing gambling, and the Texas Republican party actually wants to repeal the Texas state lottery. I'd be in favor of gambling, but it won't happen anytime soon.

Bring it on! I heard an estimate that $2.5 BILLION is spent by Texans in other states' casinos annually. We could do a lot more with that money if it stayed here!

Agreed,

I just recently moved to Dallas from West Texas and people drive back and forth all the time to the Casinos over in Hobbs New Mexico. The samething over in East Texas with people driving over to Louisianna. That is just revenue flowing out of the state.

WOW!

I'm not saying you're wrong but if that estimate is remotely close, that is a lot of coin flowing out of state!

Interesting. Most such discussions start with the idea of "gambling=bad" being taken as a given.

I was watching Stossel the other night, and he had a guest on there making the claim that gambling is beneficial to society. Keeps old people's minds engaged, teaches kids about risk management, provides entertainment, etc. He followed up with stats showing that problem gamblers were a far smaller factor %age wise than problem drinkers, and that gamblers were more sociable and more likely to donate to charities.

Of course, being 100% libertarian, the show continued by claiming that our current situation is much like Prohibition was. Legal private enterprise would deliver a more competitive product than the local bookie, and certainly better than the state lottery. Hard to argue with that, either.

I would vote for casinos in Texas. Hear that Austin? People will vote "YES!".
