If you think it might have been a drug house make sure you can verify the toxicity of the house. I have no idea how you do this but I have heard of houses where meth has been cooked and giving new occupants horrible health problems. This was not in Dallas, though, I think it was a Yahoo headline a few months ago. It is another thing to look out for...

Remediation of toxic substances, black-mold, etc... if a house can't be successfully remediated and pass health inspection as a safe house to live in, you gots problems. Structural damage from termites, fire, etc., lead paint, asbestos removal, mold, crack-house residues... it can add up. You have to have the stones, patience and bank account to do it all right.

May be a good investment for some but I'm not too sure about a quick-flip. I just know in other cities with historic districts, if a home fails engineering and health/safety standards, you have no choice but to tear-down..you won't be able to live in it or sell it as - is. Anyone planning on buying a reno property, get it inspected first by a structural engineer, get it tested for lead paint & asbestos and mold. Otherwise you're looking at a lot of capital outlay to make it right and even that's no guarantee.
