Hi All,

My wife and I will be moving to the Dallas area in March. Looking for some suggestions on good neighborhoods north of Dallas to rent a single family home. Looking for something in the 1200-1500 dollar/month range. Most important criteria for us is safety. Based on research online, so far Plano, Frisco and Allen seem to be everyone's recommendation. Any information/ideas will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Where will your work be located? Those are very popular suburbs, but unless your work is also in that area, you could face a very lengthy commute.

DFW has lots of safe suburbs all over the metroplex.

Thanks for your reply. I will be working from home most of the time, and will be flying out of DFW 2-3 times a month. So commute to work is not much of an issue, but commute to the airport might be. Is the commute from Plano, Frisco to DFW really bad?
If I was to pick a safe, quiet neighborhood close to the airport, what would my options be? Thanks.

The bigger question: do you have kids, or are you planning any? Frisco, Plano and Allen are VERY much family-oriented suburbs. If you have kids, and enjoy kid-friendly activities and places, then you will fit right in. But if you do not have kids, then you will probably feel a little out of sorts in those places. You would likely be happier in another suburb that is not so family-focused.

Yes, those cities are pretty far from DFW, especially Allen. The only direct route between them and DFW is a toll road, and its pretty crowded during rush hours. At least you won't be driving it daily.

Places closer to the airport: Grapevine (I live here), Lewisville, north Irving, Euless, Bedford. All of those suburbs are safe and quiet.

We do not have kids but are planning to this year, but will be looking to buy a home before that. Right now just looking to rent something so that we can get to know the Dallas area a little better and then make an informed decision based on our experience of having lived there for a few months.

I was looking for rental SFH's in the suburbs you mentioned, but not too many came up on some of the popular search sites like Trulia or Zillow. The ones that did come up looked considerably older than the ones in the plano/Frisco area in the same price range.

If you're looking at Frisco & Allen you might as well include McKinney as well. Great family atmosphere, only 10 min. further than Frisco (same as Allen) and when we rented a SFH, it was a 4/3 for $1450.

Consider the area of Frisco and Little Elm that borders FM 423. Straight shot to 121 to DFW (121 is toll). Houses are fairly cheap and it's quite safe. Dull, really.

Not to confuse with more places, but throwing in Irving and Richardson as well. But to be honest, kids, school and your work is the key factors here. I live in Garland, almost at the edge of Richardson. Its a very very convenient place for me. With Target, Aldi, Walmart, Super Walmart, Albertson, Sams all within 4 miles of my home. Good restaurants, bars.

I moved to Dallas from DC with family(2 kids). Stayed in Austin Ranch(In Colony, close to West Plano). West plano area is very nice. But if you are looking for family oriented diverse community, I will avoid Austin Ranch. Now I live in Frisco(Moved to sf home). I like the area where I live. It is around 30 Mins from Airport.

That's because all of the housing stock will be older than Frisco and the newer exurbs.

Besides, what do you care if a rental house is older? It's a rental. And in your price range you can't exactly afford to be that picky.
