So, as many of you know, we are building custom in Southlake.

This will be an ongoing thread and will have many questions as they pop up.

Let's start - I noticed that in Highland Park, there are many nice homes with painted brick exterior.... do you think I can pull this off in Southlake?

1. Doing so may be a code violation or more likely an HOA violation.

2. Painted brick IMO is done for four main reasons....
A. Pure aesthetics
B. To hide old crappy looking or out of style brick
C. To hide cracks caused by foundation problems
D. To preserve old eroding brick

I live in Preston Hollow a guy a few doors down painted his super ugly mustard colored brick home white and it looks fantastic.

I've seen painted brick homes in both Colleyville and Southlake. Mainly white and gray. I kinda like it plus white reflects the sunlight. It may be energy efficient and stylish! I'm sure houzz.com would have some cool ideas and tips on it.

I don't care for this house but I like the painted brick and stone choices made.

Keep this in mind: bare brick is absolutely zero maintenance, but once you paint it, you are stuck painting it FOREVER!!

this is an excellent point...Here is what I want to know..Up here in NE we seal brick chimneys, to prevent too much capillary action, which essentially extends the life of the brick. Do they do that in DFW? It's a clear coating you can't see impregnates the pours.

For me, painting a brick home usually is only done when a 2nd or nth owner moves into the property and rather than tear down, paints. For a new const., the question is...why? You have the time/choice/opportunity to do it the way you want it from the word go.

Probably because 80% of brick houses look ugly. Older they get, uglier they look. DFW has too much brick for any body with good taste. If it was real brick then you can make some sense but its all cookie cutter brick veneer obcession for God's sake.

What's the difference between real brick and brick veneer? Where in the US is "real" brick used widely?

1. Good point about the HOA, I will contact them.

2. We were thinking pure aesthetics... build was not opposed to it but asked me why I wanted painted brick if I could have my choice of new brick. I will drive by HP again and take a closer look. Figured it was to cover up old brick but man... they look really nice. I think a subdivision in Frisco (Newmann Village) does the same... it's a new place and they try to make it look HP-ish and they have lots of painted brick there and we saw a house there that we liked the exterior.
