We are considering moving to North Dallas, Richardson or East Dallas. I've read a few posts here that mention being hit with significantly higher city and county taxes.

A little about our situation:
We currently live in Denton county and realize our taxes are lower "out here." Our budget for a new home is under $250K, so we realize we are limited on good options in these neighborhoods.

I want to eliminate looking in certain areas if they are well-known for having more taxes.

We are fairly inexperienced home buyers, as we are still in our first home so forgive me if my post sounds incredibly naive.

Thanks!

Almost all of those areas will be in Dallas County and the county taxes will be the same no matter where in the county you live.

The variables are city/ISD taxes. North Dallas and east Dallas will both most likely have Dallas city and Dallas ISD taxes, though some parts of north Dallas are zoned to Richardson so you'll have Dallas city and Richardson ISD taxes. I think there are some parts of farthest north Dallas that are in Denton or Collin counties, possibly both. I don't know for sure. I don't think any part of Dallas is zoned to Dallas ISD schools north of a certain point, though I'm not sure what the dividing line is.

Also, some parts of Richardson are in Collin County so you'd have Collin County taxes, Plano ISD taxes, and Richardson city taxes. The part of Richardson I'm in is in Dallas County so I have Dallas County, Richardson city, and Richardson ISD taxes.

Google is your friend. Learn about the different rates so you can apply them to whatever property you're looking at. Also, double-check the ISD and if it's near the boundary of a county, make sure that it's listed in the correct one.

Tax rate for Dallas, Dallas County is 2.73% so for a house worth 250k tax is 2.73% of 250,000=$6825.
We are in Plano, Collin County and our rate is 2.19% so property tax for a 250k house would be $5475.
If you buy here than you'll save $1350 every year. If you own house for 10 years than its a big chunk of $13,500, worth thinking twice?

There are significant Dallas County/DISD homestead exemptions. The taxes on a $252,870 home are only $5,656.95 a year.

The City of Dallas extends into both Denton and Collin. The DISD line is the Dallas County line (roughly Trinity Mills).

We have residence homestead, disabled homestead, veteran homestead, survivor homestead and 65+ senior homestead exemptions for Plano, PISD and Collin County. Property taxes go significantly lower once you subtract qualified exemption.

I am looking at this link and according to my understanding Frisco, Allen, McKinney, Prosper, Murphy and Richardson cities do not give residence homestead exemptions but Plano and Dallas cities does offer 20%. Is this correct?

Town Exemptions HS OV65 DP

Prosper Town DP, OV65 $10,000 $0

Prosper ISD DP, FR, GIT, HS, OV65 $15,000 $10,000 $10,000

Plano City DP, FR, HS, OV65 20% $40,000 $40,000

Plano ISD DP, FR, HS, OV65 $15,000 $10,000 $10,000

This is a comparison between Prosper & Plano's exemptions.

Mulching, You are correct but these cities do give homstead exemption on ISD portion. Plano and Dallas give residence home exemption on both parts.
