We're having a little photoshoot for little ones first birthday and we are looking for a local bakery to do a smash cake before tomorrow. We had a bad experience with AJs during our wedding and we are looking for another place. Ideas?

My favorite bakery is Society Bakery on Greenville. Can be pricey, but their cakes taste amazing. The owners are also wonderful people who do a lot for the community.

Dallas Affaires in Lakewood also creates fabulous cakes. They recently created an Oscar cake for my daughters' birthday party that all the girls were fighting over.

It's probably too late for any pro bakery, though I agree Society is great. Kroger and Tom Thumb will sell little smash cakes. You might be able to get them to customize one.

Or get a Society Bakery Cupcake. Or Market Street!

Or you can make your own--I love this tiny tall cake tutorial and made my daughter's 1st birthday cake with it:

I have a young one and I've never heard the term "smash cake" before. It sounds like something food fighty! Even though you can pick it up from the context of your message, I just wanted to provide a definition to help everyone with your search:

A smash cake is a tiny cake for a baby's first few birthdays that they reach in to eat by hand. Bigger than a cupcake, but smaller than a full size cake. I wish I could help but grandma made the tiny cake for our little one.

Hmm...we just cut a regular piece of sheet cake for my nephew's first birthday. End result was the same: a big cakey frostingy mess.

Thanks everyone for the info. We ended up just going the cheap Albertsons route and it turned out perfect. Unfortunately since this was his first big experience with sugar......we were up all night. Oh well, he has a blast!

Smash Cake? I don't have kids and haven't been one for 40-something years now, but I assume the name has something to do with what a toddler actually does with the cake?

I had no idea that a special cake just for smashing existed. In my family and every other family I've known, the birthday boy or girl got a piece of sheet cake to smash.

We were discouraged from messiness as children - even (or is that especially?) on special days.... My, how things change!

My parents have photos of my brother and I cheerfully smearing cake and frosting all over ourselves and our high chairs on our first birthdays. No special 'smash cake' though.
