I am in the process of finalizing front door with my builder. The standard option which is included in the price is 42' mahogany door and double door is an upgrade. Builder wants extra $ 4000 for wrought iron double door. I am wondering if it is really worth the price. Also, what value does having a double door add to the house while selling? Any input would be appreciated.

A good front door instantly upgrades your house.

I LOVE a double door. I have one in front and then four others made of glass looking out into the backyard.
They really dress up a house.

Personally, it's purely cosmetic, and I wouldn't pay an extra $4000 for it.

Our old home came with a double Wrought Iron doors. The doors looked great and the extra front door came in real handy when installing new Capet or buying new furniture etc.

It depends, how much is the total cost of the house, I wouldn't pay extra $4k unless home is $400k or up. YMMV.

That's what I was going to say. We talking a $300k house or a $600k house ? It does not add that much value.

it's easier to get big stuff into the house. That's about it in my opinion. I nearly never open the second door unless I am moving something in.

Ask about buying the cheapest possible full sized double doors (the height can vary but 73"w by 97"h is pretty normal opening dimension). And later replace them with a custom set you really like. FWIIW there are at least five places around here that build doors from scratch every day.

My guess is the builder is trying to pocket at least $1000 of the $4000 probably $1500. Roughing in the extra width can't cost more than $100 hard costs and maybe nothing (the headers tend to be made from waste 2 bys left over from long attic/ceiling support pieces).

We have a double set that is ~73by97" - acid etched glass + iron + the wood is blem free real mahogony + medco locks + eight brass hinges and that was less than $4K - although I shopped hard and stumbled into a local shop that offered us a nice discount as the wood had been laying around for a long while.

At the end of the day assuming you like his door options it may be easier to pay the builder and move on. Although I'd bargain hard for $3250 or similar or walk if it's not too late.
