I have followed this forum for 18 months off and on trying to learn about the metroplex. I do live here now and am hoping to learn more about the debate regarding STAAR. It seems you all have great info on data regarding schools and often discuss test results and National Merit numbers. Please explain the STAAR. Who is opposed to this and why.

Its something that bonds kids and teachers together as both hate these tests.

The bottom line is some sort of broad metrics must be in place so that underperforming schools, districts, and teachers may be identified. It's also useful to identify cultural and racial disparities may be identified maybe even rectified.

Wow! My nephew scored perfect on his 8th grade STAAR tests. Would it be of any significance to him?

Probably just bragging rights, but hey - brag away!

At least in Plano elementary schools, all you have to do is pass the STAAR. The scores aren't used for placement or qualification for anything. The COGAT and MAP scores, on the other hand, are used for track placement/qualification - so they are generally more important. Maybe it's different in middle school or in other districts.

Yabbut, what happens inevitably is that, rather than the tests being measuring sticks for the knowledge acquired by children in a broad education, the tests become so important in and of themselves that everyone starts teaching How To Do Well On These Sorts of Tests.

No, I don't have a better answer, and an emphasis on stuff like SAT results in reaserching schools means in a way I'm part of the problem. I totally get that you need some objective metrics to see what's working and what isn't (with the normal observation that demographics have a huge impact on those results), but we need broader-based systems of measurement so as to encourage the type of wide-ranging, "out-of-the-box" thinking that leads to a generation of creative people AND helps develop more innovative education models. And if I knew how to do that, I'd have a different day job.
