Lancaster hospital to close Thursday | Dallas Morning News | News for Dallas, Texas | Local News (http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/news/localnews/stories/DN-lanchosp_13met.ART.State.Edition1.4540f00.html - broken link)

Today is a sad day for Lancaster and the surrounding communities. The medical center was one of the city's biggest assets and its abrupt closure has shocked many residents, including myself.

It would be great to see it re-open under new management in the near future, so it doesn't become a vacant eyesore for years and years. If that fails to happen, I personally feel that the land should be redeveloped into something to benefit the city and its residents. Luckily, there is still a lot of undeveloped land in Lancaster that could support a new medical facility, if needed.

As long as the city can continue to attract new residents and businesses here, as has happened in recent years, then it should get through this rough patch largely unaffected. Lancaster has a history of bouncing back from these types of events.

It's a shock of a decision, but it can be one that could lead to something better down the road. You never know. If the nearby Dallas Logistics Hub achieves the expected enormous success, then Lancaster is sure to get a new hospital. It will be newer and better than ever. But the city and its people must take ownership and be pro-active.

It looks like the Logistics Hub is going to become a reality very soon. I just read an article in Dallas Morning News about yet another company acquiring land there. The Cty of Lancaster is also in the process of annexing land around the Municipal Airport for use by the hub. The hospital's closing is definitely a setback, but I don't think that it will have a huge impact on the progress that the city is making in other areas.

According to an article I read in the local newspaper yesterday, while the hospital portion of the medical center is closed, the physician facilities on either side of it are remaining open. This means that my earlier idea of having that area redeveloped into something else seems unlikely to happen. It still may re-open sometime in the near future under new management, however.

I've been following the fate of this hospital since its closure five years ago and wanted to post an update. After few false starts, Lancaster has a hospital again. It is now called Crescent Medical Center and reopened last week. While small in the grand scheme of things, it is a huge and positive development for the city.
