Dallas itself I would say is not as good as Austin. The Metro can be, because the you have more to choose from.

Dallas: (depending whether you look as it as a positive or negative)
Minority Majority
BIG shopping city
Fairly diverse
Large Crime rate (which if your a police officer means you have a Job heh)
Nice Skyline
Big City
More Choices to do anything
An Important City in the world Stage ( Global city - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)
BIG SPORTS CITY
being a big city it gets more media.
More Job oppritunities

Austin:
small town feel (even if its not so small)
Small Skyline
Fairly Diverse as well but I think less so then Dallas
Better Crime rate
Texas Capital
Closer to ocean
College Town
Expensive
BIG COLLEGE FOOTBALL CITY

Dallas has everything you could ever want besides a beach. The down side to dallas is the awful traffic during rush hour and the intricate road system. Dallas is overall a way cooler city but is less laid back in most parts.

Austin is cool but rather cutesy. Austin has less shopping and not too many large concerts. Real laid back in most parts.

I personally prefer all that a big city has to offer. Austin can seem like a big small town and you can feel really old when the 40,000 UT students dominate every restaurant and bar. Then it's dead when they leave.

I like to go to Austin on weekend trips, they are great fun. But I would get bored living there every day.

So I cast my rather prejudiced vote for Dallas.

Having lived in both cities for many years (Dallas -- most of my childhood and now as an adult with two small children; Austin -- 7 years as a young professional, then married with kids), I would move back to Austin in a heartbeat. It's much more scenic, laid back, vibrant, and fun. Less crime, less smog, more trees, hills, lakes. Overall better quality of life (even with the higher cost of living). Dallas is not a bad place to live and I like it just fine (I do love our neighborhood), but I prefer Austin.

This is only the case in about a 1 - 2 square mile radius around the UT campus.
