My contract just expired for electricity for my home. The rates now are considerably higher than when I locked in with my recently expired contract.

Is it true that electric rates are highest in summer when peak electricity demand happens, even if one wishes to lock in a rate for 12 month? I can pay month to month until the fall or can lock in today for 12 months. Anyone have specific experience to guide me on this decision?

Yes, rates are higher in summer. Next plan you get, get a plan for 18 months, so for your next renewal you'll be in the winter months.

Never seen a plan like that.

Default renter's?

Interesting thread. I know you guys own homes. We've rented first (not even in TX yet) but our lease is only 10 months. We only leased for the duration of the school year and hope to own by next May. Is month to month the only option for us? We can't even sign up for 12 month unless we'll wind up renting longer? We're new folks here please give some advise.

You have several options. I've seen 3 month, 6 month, 8 month, 9 month, 12 month, 18 month, and 2 year plans. I just looked on the site listed above and they have a 10 month plan from Bounce Energy. There may be others, I just stopped looking when I found that one.

Now, the caveat is that not all companies can service all areas. What pulled up for me, with a zip code of 75070 may not be the same plans available to you where you live. Go to that site, put in your zip, and you can see what is available.

Yeah, and at the moment the 12 months + ones all have prices over .10/kwh. You have to go to a shorter plan to see lower prices.

In my area, there are plenty of 18, 20 month plans with 1000kwh plans at 8.2 to 8.5 cents per kwh.

I don't have a 3,000 sq ft house with 2 massive air conditioners running it, though. I go over 1000 kwh maybe 2-3 months out of the year. Some months I use less than 500! I think it's crap that people who use more get better rates. It should be the opposite. People who conserve/use less should be rewarded, not punished.

I'm thinking I may just go month to month with Reliant, or get them to agree to a good rate for a six month contract...then shop around again in winter.

Your electric contract shouldn't prohibit you from moving. The contract should go with you to a new location or maybe offer you an opportunity to revise the agreement. If you want to change providers then you can do that at anytime after your original contract period has expired. And still shouldn't prohibit you from moving.

You should call the Customer Relations for your electric provider and tell them you plan to move and want to know how to handle the agreement. Which brings up one point for renters... When you move it is YOUR responsibility to insure that the electric billing is reverted to the property management after you leave. The apartments will NOT assume the responsibility to do that for you.
