Being poor does not give anyone the right to steal and nearly kill an innocent woman. Maybe when the government stop rewarding irresponsible behavior with handouts, people will actually feel motivated to earn their own living.

Nobody said that it gives such a "right". But are you denying a connection between poverty and crime?

And to say that the USA of all places is "rewarding irresponsible behavior" borders on cynical. You do realize that the social safety net in the USA is among the weakest of all developed nations? You honestly want to suggest to weaken it more and somehow get less crime ?!?

Welfare simply makes people dependent and traps them in a vicious cycle. I would much rather the government use the money to help people find jobs, or give them some sort of training.

welfare rewards irresponsible behavior by paying people for having more kids than they can afford. I don't understand how someone can struggle to provide for their first child, yet they have a second, third, fourth, and sometimes more. Perhaps they should think of supplying the poor with condoms and birth control. It is a fact that birth rates are higher on the low end of the socio economic spectrum.

Perhaps the link between crime and poverty is valid because someone that is given a handout, rather that have to earn something simply does not respect the value of a dollar so to speak.

Maybe I should quit my job, get pregnant, and leave my husband, then the government would pay my rent, pay for my medical care, pay for my groceries, and most likely pay for my college education.

Call me crazy, but I believe everyone, rich of poor should be held responsible for their actions.

ANY area of Dallas or another other city can be a bad place to be if you go there at the wrong minute. Keep your eyes open, wherever you might be, and stay out of the way of hold ups, robberies, and the such. DO NOT GET INVOLVED. THAT'S WHAT THE POLICE ARE FOR.

folding up does not always insure safety. many a person has lost their life or been raped trying to cooperate in what seemed like a simple robbery.

Just know, folks, that this time of the year... throughout the holidays... is the WORST time for these type things to happen! Be extremely careful!

At a time when it should bring out the best, it seems it always brings out the worst in some people... whether it be shopping, parking, driving, travelling, partying, crime, domestic violence, etc! It just seems to bring out the "crazies" in force, regardless of where you are.

Wishing all of you the safest and happiest of holidays!

I don't think you would enjoy that lifestyle. It isn't all it's cracked up to be.

And of course, everybody should be held responsible. Duh! That doesn't change the fact that violent crime correlates with poverty.

I think I'm going to go ahead and get my permit.

Then I need to buy a gun.

You are right, there is indeed a connection between poverty and crime. More crime causes more poverty, not the other way around. To say the reason why people do not commit crimes is because they have a safety net is not only wrongheaded, it's dangerous. It perpetuates the idea that somehow poor people are less responsible for their choices than others. It may make you feel good to infantilize the poor and see them as pity objects to inflate your self-esteem, but it does nothing to help them, let alone society as a whole.

Regardless, I'm a CHL holder and my safety net is the .38 loaded with hollow points that goes everywhere with me - including that particular Tom Thumb on Preston which I stop at regularly on my way home from work.

I agree wholeheartedly. Committing violent crimes is a choice, not an obligation...for anyone.
