This is not encouraging:

Fire Marshal: Inspections Refused Since West Blast

Although there are many upsides to the low-regulation, limited-government Texas model, this sure seems like one of the downsides.

Hoping that there's not another McWane somewhere in the bunch, but I guess there's really no way of knowing, until the next horrible disaster.

We've been storing mountains of ammonium nitrate in various places for many decades. It's more or less impossible to farm the alkali soil of central Texas without it-. Ammonium nitrate is also much less popular now than in the past because in non-alkali soils other types of nitrogen fertilizers stay in the soil just fine.

It'll be interesting to see some of the final reports later. But a good guess is that normal firefighting measures (water) made the problem significantly worse.
