Hello Everyone

This is my first time posting on this forum, after being a lurker for a while. I am wondering how the nursing job market is in the DFW area. I will be graduating Vanderbilt's Nurse Practitioners program with a concentration in Pediatrics. I have a little over a year until I graduate, but me and my husband plan to move to the area when I’m done. I have no nursing experience, and will be applying as a new graduate to potential jobs. I will have a B.S Biology degree as well as the M.S Nursing. Does anyone know how forgiving the DFW job market is to new graduate Nurse Practitioners?

Depends....FNP? can get job with doc office, 20 - 25 pt/day. $80k maybe starting? Most people prefer experience of course so market yourself very confidently...may have to start with hospital based office Baylor/THR/Parkland hospitals community/suburb clinics for experience. Busy busy busy.....but if you have worked as hospital RN, you can roll with it. THR always hiring esp if you have experience. They are former Presbyterian and are gobbling up suburbia doc offices (docs worried about $$ d/t Healthcare Act) but as you know primary care docs will be okay, in fact getting small raise, its the specialists getting cuts. Try and stick with primary care, get about 3yrs exp then see if you want to specialize. It's the best experience anyway...you see everything and you will get very confident sooner that NP's that specialize right off the bat IMO.

Thanks for the reply. I'm already in the pediatrician track (PNP). If I had to do it all over again...I should have went with a more general track?

PNP is fine. Cook Children's in Fort Worth hires for both hospital and physician offices.

Thanks for the reply. I'm just so eager to finish school and start a new chapter in my life. We have visited a few times and love it. I really like the Southlake area. Just want to make sure I'm moving into a good job market. My husband does IT security and says he would be able to find a job easily.

Southlake is a long way from most of the big hospitals, including Cook. There are some great physician practices there.

Yes, that looks pretty close to current market.
