Spouse car (2001 Sonata) is broken. Battery is down. Even after starting up with jumper, it is not firing properly. Lots of vibrations and strange noise from engine. Not sure how much it is going to cost. But we would like to dispose it if it is going to cost a lot to fix it ($1000+). Is it possible to dispose/donate broken car without fixing it?

Yes, you can donate it to many different organizations as long as you have the title or can sign the title to the donating organization. Just look up donate car or boat on Google, and you'll find tons of groups. They come to pick it up with a towtruck, it doesn't have to be drivable. I think PBS (public broadcasting) is a big reputable group that is among many. They will also send you a tax form for a charitable donation, so not only do they take it away, you also might get a few bucks back on your taxes.

You can also put it on craigslist, and maybe someone will buy it for a few thousand.

But donating it is far easier.

Finally, if you are going to get a new car, you can also have it towed to your dealership, and they will typically give you something for it as trade-in value.

You could also take it to a junkyard and get some $$ that way if you wanted to be a little more avaricious.

Thanks TheOverdog and adyn for the information. Please recommend me some mechanics to get some estimates for repairing. Not sure if it is just the battery or something wrong with engine.

Sorry never had any exceptional experiences with mechanics ever, so I have no recommendations to give. I typically take my car to Firestone in a 'devil you know is better than the devil you don't' kind of way.

BTW, you can get your battery tested for free at a lot of places, or you can just get a new one at Wal-mart and if that doesn't fix the problem, take it back.

If you're a DIY type person, see if you can get the codes off your car. Autozone will pull the codes for you at no charge. Once this is complete just google the codes and your make/model and you are sure to find threads on car forums explaining your issues and how to resolve. It honestly sounds like it may be something as super simple as a coil pack being out. Cheap and very easy to fix.

do a search by your zip code on the NPR Car Talk site to find mechanics with reviews near your area:

You can call cars for kids dot com and they come and tow the car for you. I hear the ad on espn radio daily.

Thanks for all the replies. I am planning to tow it to NTB and do the initial diagnosis to get estimates. If it is going to cost more than $500, I will go with donate/dispose option.
