There are some very nice apartments tucked away near the medical center. You cannot see them from 635 or Central expressway but they are there and are a very short walking distance. If you choose this area make sure you stay east of central and south of 635 (stay in the areas walking distance from Medical Center. You could also check out the apartments in The Village. Just make sure you stay south of Northwest Hwy because anything north of Northwest HWY is going to be very, very sketchy. Anything south of Northwest Hwy would be great and your commute would be 10 minutes.

The area just south of LBJ and East of 75 along Coit has 2 city blocks of apartments. And there's another nice batch on Banner slightly behind the Westin Hotel called Churchill in the Park. Do a google earth satellite view and you can see the scope of what I'm talking about.
Not sure about rates...maybe higher than your budget but it's a place to start.

Good Luck

We lived at Bell Park Central - very convenient and well-kept community. Sandwiched between Coit/N. Central Expressway and Medical City facing Forest Ln. I would think a 1 br would be within your budget.

Which medical center? There's the UTSW/Parkland complex near 1-35E and Medical Center drive and then there's Medical City off 75/Central near Forest.

You have gotten posts with suggestions for both places

I recommend Churchill on the Park. Very safe and nice.
