Waterview has a past reputation as an absolute hellhole. I have no idea whether or not it has improved, but I'd be wary.

As a masters student, she might be more comfortable looking for an area slightly further from campus with more of a young professional vibe rather than living in a student dorm or apartment complex.

I lived in Prairie Springs and loved it. It's pricey, but I always felt safe there. Every unit has a private garage. There is a UTD Shuttle that picks up students right at the front gate, and also a paved bike path that leads right to the campus. (Granted, its a few miles away)

There is no need to be wary. That article is nearly 10 years old. Therefore, the problems described within it were addressed long ago. So long ago, in fact, that Waterview no longer exists. Those apartments were absorbed into University Village. Our on-campus apartments are all managed under one roof, so to speak.
