My kids are ages 5 and 7 and currently attend elementary in Highland Park. We are moving to a beautiful home in Lewisville (Hickory Creek) very soon and I have absolutely zero knowledge of the Lewisville area apart from the lake. My question is, is there a decent public elementary in my area or must we go private and if so, what are your recommendations? Highland Park has an excellent school system so I'm hoping to enroll them in a school with a similar or at least high rating. From a quick google search, it comes up that Castle Hills may be the best option for public but I'm not sure if I'm close enough to the area to be accepted.
What suggestions do you have for me? I need to enroll them by Feb 1,2014! Thanks so much!

Are you selling your place in Highland Park? We are trying to find a house in a good location with great schools in Highlandpark, Coppell or West Plano. Please post listing if its on market yet or if there is a way to have a look before it goes on the market.

We looked at Hickory Creek and thought it was beautiful, right on the lake, but were concerned about the schools. It looked like the best option was the Highland Village schools, if you can somehow get transferred in (Lewisville ISD). Hickory Creek is zoned to Lake Dallas. Not sure how easy it is to transfer between districts, but doesn't seem like a slam dunk.

Check out websites great schools and schooldigger too

The best public schools in that vicinity are the Flower Mound & Highland Village schools, which are part of the Lewisville ISD.

Hickory Creek has some great homes. According to my knowledge, LISD rarely allows transfers. Anybody got any idea about how long it takes to drive to top privates from Hickory Creek area?

You'd have to cross the Lake Lewisville, 121, President George Bush Turnpike & then fight 635 to get to the areas of North Dallas that house the top privates. It's doable, but you'll have to wake up pretty early day-in, day-out.

You might look into Coram Deo Academy in Flower Mound if you're not willing to accept Lake Dallas schools and cannot get a transfer to your choice of school in Lewisville ISD; I've heard good things from parents who've enrolled their child with that school. FWIW, I think Lake Dallas ISD would work just fine for most students. While it's not top tier, it's certainly not bottom-rung either.

Have you even talked to Lewisville ISD to see if they allow an open enrollment or transfer ?
Usually the best schools are maxed out.

Being "close to" a school does not mean that you are zoned to that school. You need to check with the school districts to verify which district the house located in and which schools the house is zoned to for attendance. Much of that can be done online. The central appraisal district may be able to verify the school, or check with Lake Dallas ISD and Lewisville ISD to see if the property lies within one of those school districts.

Then, you can decide if you want to pursue a transfer to another school district or apply to a private school. If none of that works, you may decide to not move or move to another property in a different location.

Yes, Hickory Creek is Lake Dallas ISD. Like others said, it's not awful, but it certainly isn't close to the top. I spent 1 year at Lake Dallas HS and the difference between Lake Dallas ISD and LISD was marked.

I cant speak to the elementary level.

I'd be surprised if you can transfer into LISD. I've heard of transfers between LISD schools, but not outside of the district (and there is usually a reason, like this school offers X that the school we are zoned for does not)
