The class of 2012's SAT scores have been released by the TEA. This is the first time the scores were published using the 2400 point scale (math, verbal, and the new-ish writing section).

Interesting results:
1. Highland Park remains #1 and actually increased the gap between 1 & 2 from 58 points to 69 points. Based on previous years M+V scores, appear to have approx 575-580/800 score on writing section.

2. Plano West and Senior remained in T10, but Plano East fell considerably to #21. Appears West and Senior have writing scores in the 539-559 range; East's score is in the 482 range. That's a BIG weakness that school will need of overcome to regain T10 rank.

3. Frisco Centennial and Frisco Liberty BOTH moved up 4-9 spots to be in the T15. Big move! Appears their writing score is in the 538-550 range which tracks right along with Plano West/ Senior. McKinney Boyd also moved up almost 10 ranks to T15 this year, also with strong writing score in the range of 559. VERY interesting developments in Collin County.... Prosper still nothing to write home about (#30, 500 writing score).

4. Allen took a big tumble, from T15 to #23. Writing score in the 493 range. Ouch!!

5. DISD scored terrible, as usual. Best school was Hillcrest this year (#71) vs #99 LY....improvement?! Hillcrest writing score in the range of 418. Woodrow was the 2nd ranking DISD neighborhood school (#75 v 111 LY)....writing score in the 431 range. The worst of the DISD schools (Madison, Roosevelt, South Oak Cliff) all scored in the 330-340 range. I didn't include magnets in the below list but for reference, SEM Magnet scored approx 575 and TAG Magnet scored 695....very impressive for TAG (way above HP's writing score, whereas SEM magnet tracks right with HP).

6. For other top charter/ magnet schools, Westlake Academy scored approx 560 in writing and ranked 5 overall (behind DISD TAG & SEM, Highland Park, and North Hills Uplift Charter). North Hills scored approx 559 on writing section.

On points 2, 3 & 4 - it will be interesting to see how Collin County pans out. Off hand I'd think Plano East really took a hit with the inclusion of the writing score due to its high population of ESL students from Mexico & Asia, and conversely the McKinney and Frisco schools would benefit from including the writing score. Allen's mega high school / football uber alles approach is what immediately comes to mind with their drop, though top 25 in DFW is nothing to sneeze at.

A few things that leaped out to me:

- Sherman up in Grayson County is (1) on the list & (2) a top 20 school.
- Paschal over in Fort Worth scored really well; you'd think DISD would be able to replicate that with Woodrow and maybe Hillcrest/WT White. Any idea of how other FWISD campuses scored?
- Garland HS seems to punch above its weight, which speaks to what International Baccalaureate can do. Am I missing something else here?
- Sachse HS is MIA. It'd be interesting to see how Garland ISD's most affluent school rates.

SEM vs. HP is quite a bit more impressive when you consider the demographics...TAG is a very middle class high school, while SEM is more working class.

Hillcrest, Woodrow, and White aren't bad numbers when you adjust for the demographics. Paschal has fewer poor students, though it's probably punching above its weight regardless. The fact that over half of Skyline's kids are magnet students probably results in them punching above their weight. I was pleasantly surprised by TJ, which I believe has more low income students than any other comprehensive high school in the Metroplex.

The rest are depressing even considering the demographics, especially SOC (I don't see Lincoln on the list, but I'd expect it would be similar to Madison and Velt). It's quite obvious they don't have many kids getting extra/any SAT prep.

I just completely missed Sasche. 1453. Which puts them around #57. Not stellar.

As for FWISD, I posted Paschal because it is the crown jewel neighborhood high school in the district. FW Arlington Heights, FW Southwest, and FW Western Hills all would have ranked in the 60-70's (a bit above Hillcrest/ Woodrow). . The balanced of FWISD campuses ranked above the worst 6 DISD schools. Hard to completely compare district to district, but FWISD appears to be a notch or two above DISD across the board for neighborhood schools.

Mean test score ranking are meaningless to me...

What I rather see is first year college matriculation rates that don't include remediation classes for content one should have mastered in high school and occupation satisfaction rates for all student 2, 4 and 6 years post high school graduation. Followed by debt ratios for college grads at age 25...

When will we honor gifted your who's talents can't be measured by standardized test, innovators who can't be boxed in like sheeple???

What on earth would a debt ratio have to do with the high school one attends? I'm quite confused by that.

Inflated grades plus meaningless test scores sometimes means students apply to college even if they didn't intend to go or don't know what they want to study. Enroll in colleges they can not afford.
Everyone gets excited about the acceptance to college, money is borrowed it takes 4-6 years to graduate, due to remediation course, change of majors etc. ... only to find out that jobs aren't paying enough for entry level folks to pay back student loans fast enough.

Students borrowing money for remediation is my big pet peeve. Students saddle with loan payments that are $200-$400 or more per month is the next, especially considering what jobs are paying. After loan payments it makes their salary look like the same minimum wage they would have earned without college and a college education does not always equate to knowledge or skill.

I fully understand that but I still fail to see how it has anything to do with the high school one attended.

Highland Park would come in at #1 by that scale solely because of the fact that more HP parents can afford to pay the full cost of their kids' educations than the parents at any other high school. It would have absolutely nothing to do with the quality of education received at HP High.

I'll just say I am very grateful that writing was not part of the SAT when I took the exams. If so, my score would have suffered significantly. I hate writing based grading once you get past grammatical based elements as it seems extremely subjective. I have turned in the exact same paper in both HS and college, and received a significantly higher score in college....glad to see HP still doing well.

On a side not, do you have a source for these results TC80 or did you gather from multiple avenues?
