I'm a single mom of a 6yr old. I'm thinking of relocating to the Dallas area this summer to be closer to family. We currently live in Wyoming, Ohio (a community/city in the middle of Cincinnati). It's a small close knit community with a great school district (ranked 3 in the state). There are 4 shopping malls within 10-15min radius, walking distance to the schools, libraries, activities. Very family friendly. I'm looking for something similar but reasonably priced (renting).

I've read that the traffic in Dallas can be insane and the consensus seems to be move close to your job. Well I'm pretty sure I'll be able to transfer with my job. Depending on what's available at the time will determine if I stay there. So I really don't want to be tied to a neighborhood based on that. I also don't want to have to uproot my daughter from school too much either.

Any suggestions?

What do you consider reasonably priced?

You also don't want to be an hour + away from the job! GIve us a general idea of some major streets or zip code.

She's also asking for small school districts. Honestly, other than HPISD, are there any small districts in the vicinity that would have shopping, libraries and the ability to walk to school? Lake Dallas?

We need to know where she's working but yes there are many areas where you can walk to an elementary.

Grapevine, Bedford, Flower Mound, Coppell, Lewisville. Some of the ISD's may be larger but the schools are all very local.

By small school districts, do you mean schools with low enrollments, or are you specifically looking for a district that's small? Most of the school districts in Dallas have more than one high school, and most high schools are at least 1600 students, with the majority closer to 2500.

The only small district in Dallas County is Sunnyvale, which has one 2A high school (meaning fewer than 450 students). I have no idea of its academic reputation--it has only had secondary school for about 5 years now. That's about 15 miles from the city center, and if Google maps is giving me the right location (it says Joe Field Road, near Royal and 35), about 30 minutes from where you say your job is. Sunnyvale still has a relatively rural feel.

There are some more in the exurbs, but those are going to be 30+ miles from downtown.

$800 for a 1BR apartment can go pretty far in most areas of the Mextroplex. Anything larger than that and you're looking at near-slum conditions, at least in the city of Dallas. I know basically nothing about apartments in the suburbs, though.
