I'm looking at a possible relocation for a job on the border of North Dallas and Farmer's Branch (intersection of Spring Valley Road and Midway Road) and know nothing of the area. My demographics are early 20's, male, and single, thus schools are not a concern. I am looking for a one bedroom apartment that will minimize my commute to work, but be in a good, safe area. From looking at a map, Addison, West Richardson, Carrollton and Farmer's Branch are viable in terms of proximity, but I am truly open at this point. Do you have any recommendations for areas/communities I should be looking at and areas to avoid? How is the traffic in the area during normal commuting hours? Do you have any specific apartment recommendations?

Any and all feedback/tips is greatly appreciated and most welcomed.

I would stick to Addison it's the closest to your job and there are quite a few nice places close by. The crime rate is high in Addison, but I wouldnt worry because it's mainly from drunks at the bars nearby on beltline. Addison Circle has some nice buildings, but I don't know your budget. There's cheaper garden style apartments all over there too.

Depends on your budget. There are several complexes right at the Spring Valley-Midway intersection or within a mile of it, at varying price points and demographics. There are no general areas to avoid--the area as a whole is one of the safest in the Metroplex, but some individudal apartment complexes may have more petty crime.

As a twenty something, I can tell you you'll likely be bored in the area. Most young adults live further south, and if you're looking to make friends, you may prefer to look at Uptown (if you can afford to pay $900+ a month) or the Village. Those are longer commutes but far more liveable for a young person. If you're dead set on living nearby, Addison Circle is probably the best bet within a 5 mile radius.

As far as traffic, it depends on where you end up living, but if you're in the North Dallas area, you can avoid the highways and take Midway or Marsh north, and there will be very little traffic--you can get to most places in the area in a 5-10 minute drive. The Village would be around a 25 minute drive on Walnut Hill and Midway; taking 75 and 635 can make it 15 minutes if there's no traffic or up to an hour if there is. Uptown would be 15-30 minutes up the Dallas North Tollway--usually less traffic than the free highways but it can get congested, or else 25-30 minutes up Lemmon Avenue and Midway.
