Hi all,

I am hoping to get some opinions on commuting in DFW. My boyfriend just got a job in Southlake and is trying to decide where to move to. I know that DFW is notorious for bad traffic during rush hour, but how far is too far? Would be it plausible to commute from Carrollton? What about Irving? Are there specific areas that are known to be really bad traffic-wise and should be avoided at all costs?

We are open to any suggestions and information you could give. Thanks!

-----

More information:
We are looking at apartments in the <$1000 range (for one bedroom). For the type of area we want to live in, we have a preference for maybe a bigger suburb - just somewhere where it's easy to go to do shopping and go to restaurants. We don't have kids so no concerns over school districts or anything like that.

A commute around 20-30 minutes would be ideal, so how far can we really be from Southlake and still be close to that? Is this realistic?

635. Just stay away from 635 east of 35 for years and years to come.

Duly noted! I just looked at the "typical traffic" data on Google Maps... Rush hour looks awful.

What kind of area do you want to live in? What is your budget for housing? What is the maximum commute he's willing to make?

All of this ^^^ and you can probably find something more convenient than Carrollton.

A 20-30 minute commute to South Lake would be ideal. He was considering Carrollton and Irving, so how realistic is that given these parameters?

Have you looked at Grapevine at all, or the northern suburbs of Fort Worth? Did you ask in the Fort Worth forum? Southlake is in Tarrant County IIRC so they might be able to give you some good advice over there.

We have looked in Grapevine a bit. I think it might be a more plausible option, personally.

You're right and Southlake is in Tarrant County. I haven't really checked out the Fort Worth forum but that's a good idea. I will try posting over there too. Thank you!

Grapevine would be my first thought/choice, also check Keller and North Richland Hills, although my knowledge of apartments there is almost nonexistent.

Where is his job at in Southlake? If in the eastern part you might find parts of Irving (anybody know if Las Colinas makes sense for them price-wise?) works better than Keller or NRH because eastbound traffic on 1709 (Southlake Blvd) is awful in the AM.

Thanks for your comment! His job is off of highway 114, not too far from the town square. I will make a mental note about 1709 - I did see it on the Google traffic map and it seems to be congested all the time during rush hour.
