True, WW SAT scores are low National Merit Scholars are zilch with a long list of reasons--not excuses. That is an issue the current principal is aware of and is working to change--bigger changes have been his priority in his first couple of years at the school. We have a decent percentage of first-generation HS graduates and students who don't want to be at school and certainly don't care about performance.

That said, the WW feeder pattern has been a great choice for many families and I have full confidence that my children will be college ready when they graduate. I was an honor grad with a very high SAT score and made very low grades my first two semesters at college. A college degree is as much about stick-to-it-tiveness than anything else. Plus, it has much to do with the students themselves--my oldest daughter attended Lakewood El. when it was "low performing" and she received the same, great education from the day she got there that she did when she graduated (she is now and honor student in IB at WW). It wasn't until the school was designated as "neighborhood"--translation: no low-income, bused-in students--that the performance ratings sky rocketed and it was deemed a good choice for the Lakewood-proper residents.

I'm not trying to debate numbers--WW won't win. I do, though, get tired of the constant bashing that is posted and spread throughout the community. The feeder pattern is performing well statistically according to the TEA and NCLB. It sounds like Lakewood is very similar to Cherry Creek and this family could be well suited in Lakewood/East Dallas as opposed to a suburb or less-diverse community. Their children will receive a good education, as well, without going private. There are many posts I acknowledge as not a good match for Lakewood.

Again, I wish the best of luck and a hearty "Welcome to Texas" to this family!

Today is SAT day at Woodrow. DISD is paying for all juniors to take the test. I think this is wonderful. However, I'm sure that will lower our average scores. So we'll be bashed for that. The district is also paying for ACT, AP and IB tests this year. This is a great boon for many families.

Lakewooder and/or mdmat, do you happen to know if Woodrow offers any SAT prep classes at no cost? I think Plano ISD does this, which would explain why their scores are significantly higher. Part of scoring well on that test is knowing the test-taking strategies, and I'd guess that most of the less affluent families don't have the money to invest in Princeton Review or Karen Dillard. Wasn't sure if this was in the works as part of Principal Richardson's plan.

Woodrow has six or seven sections of SAT prep being taught as a regular class this year. There were some SAT prep classes on campus on Saturdays in February and I think January. Prior to this year the district classes were suggested. There was a very successful SAT prep class taught by a couple of teachers in the 90s and early 2000s, but they retired and that's when students were directed to the district classes. That didn't work so a committee was formed to implement new strategies.
