J.C. Penney to shed 33 stores, cut 2000 jobs as part of turnaround

NEW YORK, Jan 15 (Reuters) - J.C. Penney Co Inc said on Wednesday it will close 33 underperforming stores and cut 2,000 jobs as part of its turnaround.
The closings will generate cost savings of $65 million per year, beginning in 2014. Penney expects estimated pretax charges of about $26 million in the current quarter.
The struggling department store chain operates about 1,100 stores in the United States and had 116,000 employees as of Feb. 2, 2013.

Anybody know what stores will be closed ?

They can close all the stores as far as I'm concerned - unappealing style of clothing, inferior quality and lack of customer service at the store level. I'd rather buy fewer higher quality pieces than waste my money at JCP buying several ugly cheap pieces that last a wash or two.

I agree, it's so sad; I used to love getting clothes from there. Now it's schlock.

The thing is, its not cheap per se' I mean sears and pennys use to carry good clothing and good prices. I haven't been in a pennys in years, because macys usually has better deals. But even Macys has become just a bunch of generics. The true departments stores that have quality is Nordstrom. That store has always been good quality clothes. Dillards is a basically a "high end macys"> Sears, Pennys, Macys....have all become inferior. The only difference is the maycs has some branded items. But are they really branded anymore...or are all the jeans sitting in one big china, asia, Indonesia piles and the workers just grab the "label" and sew them on. LOL

I will never understand how different the JC Penney stores in the US are from the JC Penney store in Puerto Rico. JCP PR is definitely a more upscale experience, comparable to a Nordstrom. They get high quality clothing, shoes, accessories, everything. It is also in the prestigious Plaza Las Americas shopping mall (and in other smaller malls, but the flagship store and piece de resistance is the Plaza Las Americas location). When I first "crossed the pond" to live in the States I couldn't believe what JC Penney is here on the mainland. Sad to see it go even more downhill. I wonder why the JCP Puerto Rico model works so well, and why the company didn't try to recreate it in the US.

The Puerto Rico store is the largest in the franchise (I think) ... The Valley View store here in Dallas is/was the 2nd largest. As to why the quality/selection is better in Puerto Rico, not sure!

I really tried to give Penney's a chance - I grew up with them, living in a smaller town and Penney's was our go to store for clothing and linens/towels. Loved their Christmas catalog as a child ... Sigh ...

I grew up on K-Mart and Target clothing, so shopping at JCP is ok from my perspective. I tend to get my jeans from JCP, khakis from Macys and shirts from any place that has good deals.
