Still relatively new to Dallas and searching for my next rental home, hopefully within a short drive to downtown. Are there any classic brownstone or terraced row house-style townhouses like you would find in cities like New York, Boston and Washington D.C.?

Not many. Dallas is no where as dense as NYC or Boston so houses are more spread out and on land (well, "land" meaning not shoulder-to-shoulder, not as in actual acreage). Dallas is spread out, not up.

There are a few areas where you can find rows of townhomes - most commonly in the Uptown part of Dallas. The architecture is more modern / contemporary than classic / Georgian. They aren't cheap and won't work if you need public schools, but Uptown is great for single (or DINK) professionals. Very walkable neighborhood, too!

Here are some examples:

2420 Hugo St Apt 5, Dallas, TX 75204 - Home For Sale and Real Estate Listing - realtor.com®

4608 Abbott Ave Unit 125, Highland Park, TX 75205 - New Home for Sale - realtor.com®

Addison Circle area has some newer developments which may be as close to what you're looking for.
Check out the newer townhomes along Quorum Drive which runs North of Beltline and east of Dallas N. Tollway. Here's a google map link below so you can do a street view and see if any of these developments are what you're looking for:

I like this area and have seen it grow from vacant lots to a pretty cool area. One of my favs in Dallas.

Good Luck!

There are hundreds within the areas surrounding downtown. Uptown, Knox Park, Bryan Place, Farmers Market and Oak Lawn would be the neighborhoods to look at if you have to be close to downtown.

They can be pretty pricey in Uptown as most are in the State-Thomas neighborhood.

Bryan Place is less pricey and is just as close to downtown as State-Thomas, but isn't next to the action like State-Thomas, but its really close to the Arts District, and its closer Deep Ellum, Lower Greenville and Lakewood.

If you don't mind being a little further from downtown, there are a lot hidden around the areas close to and in Lakewood. Lakewood is a nice area with its own nightlife, shops and restaurants. One of the prettier areas of town as well. There are lots of townhomes between this area and Lower Greenville(another little walkable areas). Great area to live in.

Oak Lawn has a ton as well. Its next to Uptown. Lots to do there on the main thoroughfares, and much more neighborhood like than Uptown. Lots of trees.

Knox Park are the next neighborhoods out from Uptown to the north and are much more neighborhoodish and quiet. But very accessible to restaurants, shops, etc. You could literally walk to either Knox-Henderson(another nice walkable area of retail, restaurants, etc that can get pretty busy on weekends and nights) or the West Village and have access to Katy Trail which is the main running/walking/biking trail in inner-city Dallas.

Farmers Market area is starting to stockpile them as well. Its withing the downtown freeway loop, so its more urban than most, and is next to the actual Farmers Market and Deep Ellum(another nightlife area)

There is a ton of them in the State Allen area. All of them seem to be 3 stories with a similar floor plan, but very nice.

Thanks to everyone for the great recommendations! I'm going to look into all of these. Very glad to see there are some options, and hopefully some for a reasonable monthly rate as well.

I was looking for a friend about 9 months ago and remember seeing a lot in the area behind the Whole Foods on Lemmon. Hawthorne, Bowser, etc. I'm not sure if that area qualifies as Uptown or Oak Lawn, but it is certainly lovely and close to downtown. My boss used to own one in the area (newer, very nice) and I believe the rent was around $2k.

That's Oaklawn. That part of Oaklawn is pretty much all townhomes all the way down Lemmon to Oak Lawn Ave. Then they start again on the other side of the Katy Trail and run all the way up to Knox. There have to be thousands of them in that area alone.
