Any advice and specific apartments?

How about living DIRECTLY DOWNTOWN??

I'm thinking about moving here myself.
They are studios for $610.

1 block from lightRail, a block or two from Woodall Rodgers Freeway and close to
Klyde Warren Park (above the freeway) and near the center of Everything.

And if they are too small and cheap for you,
then rent TWO apartments... !

A house near to us that was just for sale is now for rent. It's a little more than you were looking for but you are half a block from Tom Thumb and it's a quite, safe, friendly and a great neighborhood.

I second or third the suggestion for Pavillon apartments at Inwood village. You can walk to restaurants, shops, theater, dentist, and many other services and...eatzi's! Easy commute downtown or to DFW and NOT on LUV flight path. At least check it out!

You have gotten a bunch of great suggestions in this thread. The best thing to do is to come visit Dallas before you move to spend a weekend exploring the various neighborhoods mentioned and finding out which one feels like home to you & your SO. It's hard to explain the differences between what you read and what the actual experience is like in the various in-town neighborhoods. You're unlikely to come to a decision without a visit.
