^^^ This. I'd be THRILLED if Publix were to move into the DFW metro.

There used-to-be one on the corner of Camp Wisdom & Polk.

Upscale that I thought I was in a Bel-Aire (California store) !
So neat and tidy and ... expensive !!!

I sure hope that they don't disappear.

On a lighter note.. the DFW has gained some Winco's
Well, you're in luck. The Tom Thumb at Hampton Road is no longer "so fancy and upscale that you'd think you were in Bel-Air store." If we're making LA comparisons, it's probably more Bellflower than Beverly Hills.

We lost our Safeways here in Wichita Falls 20 years ago. They were replaced by Food Lions that went out 5 years later. Up here we are more upset by United selling to Albertson's. United here is a major part of the community. We don't have Krogers, H.E.B., etc.

Me too, or HEB. Anything to shake up the status quo. I wouldn't want us to turn into San Antonio, though, where your options begin and end with Wal-Mart and HEB. I think they have at least one Whole Foods there, maybe a Sprouts or two...I had heard they were going to open some stores down there.

My experience with Tom Thumb has been different from most of you. I found it cheaper than Kroger on many instances (Kroger is cleaner and brighter though). They seem to have a lot of items on sale with the Tom Thumb card. It may also be because I usually look for the Safeway brand for most items.

I've always found Tom Thumb to be very expensive. The only draw for me is that their stores were always really close to the neighborhoods I've lived in. I've been shopping more at Trader Joe's and Whole Foods, but I wish we could get an HEB for the low end. If I had those 3 stores, I wouldn't feel like I needed Tom Thumb/Kroger/Albertsons.

Central Market, at least the one in Plano, carries many HEB brand staples at very competitive prices. Even some major brands are significantly less expensive than, say Sprouts (CM being $1 less expensive than Sprouts on the Earth Balance spread I use).

I can make a pretty efficient circuit from WF on the Tollway, to CM, to Kroger and fill it in with a twice a month share of fresh veggies from Urban Acres. To me, Trader Joe's is just too specialized in what they offer, and Sprouts too inconsistent, to make the trek worthwhile.

Tom Thumb I treat like the convenience store: if they go I doubt I will miss them.

Your grocery patterns are similar to mine. Tom Thumb is a dash in and out for one or two items. Almost all our produce comes from Central Market. Meat is a CM/WF/Sprouts combo.

I don't really like Tom Thumb, Albertsons, or Kroger.

Nope, Food Lion was separate and built their own stores.

In WF, Safeways become Furr's. Then I believe Furr's become Brookshires.

That's too bad... Tom Thumb usually has decent prices when you hit the timing right (better than Krogers).
