Hello,
I have just been told by new owners that they will not renew my lease. My lease wii be up at the end of March 2014 and they closed on my duplex on February 14 and gave me a non-renew lease letter a day letter the next day. I have been in this doplex for 4 years, a very good tenent, have never been late on rent, and the place look better now than when i moved in. I understand i have to move but 5 weeks is not enough time to plan a move. What are my rights as a renter....

Read your lease, which generally carries over from the prior owner. If they gave proper notice of termination per the terms of the lease, then you must leave. If you have to give them 30 days' notice of your intention to move out, then in general, they must do the same.

Five weeks is more than enough time to plan a move. Once I got notice of my job here in Dallas, I moved here in ten days. It can be done.

Your lease should explain your rights. I understand that typically your rights are the same as your duties and 30 days is typical.

I agree that 5 weeks should be plenty of time. Get out there this morning and look at what's available.

My leases require 60 day's notice and then they roll m2m. So if a 12-month lease expired on March 31st, I would need to advise my tenants of non-renewal before Feb 1st or they would have until April 31st. But if they were on a month to month lease, I would only have to provide a 30 day notice. My leases are very typical.

So, check your lease.....

Your lease should specifically state how much notice they should give you. 5 weeks is technically enough notice- I usually see 30 days/1 month notice as the norm. I'd get the ball rolling now to see what other housing options are available for you now.

What part of town do you live in ?

They may want to tear the house down and put up something more expensive.
