Why do you think they were able to come to the joint agreement with their foe American Airlines

EXACTLY. As I've said in other threads, this city and region are large enough to adopt an "and" philosophy vs an "either/or" one.

It's approved. City should have stayed out of it, as long as Virgin and American Airlines had a contract. This is good for news for people that fly either SW or Virgin America. If SW had nearly all the gates, they would have raised rates without any competition at Love.

Bad decision, but SW will get the gates anyway in a couple years when Virgin "America" craters.

BlindLemonJello, Obviously you work or have worked for American. You are not hiding very well the sour grapes you have been venting over the fact that Southwest has murdered your precious monopoly hungry airline time after time in the marketplace. It took bankruptcy and a mega merger to get them out of a failed business model. They have pulled off their latest mastery by making Virgin go away from not only DFW, but also Philadelphia, the largest fortress hub of USAir and awarding them the 2 Love gates. Looking at the big picture, that's not an increase, but a net decrease in competition.

In time, the failed business model and its associated growing costs will once again catch up to AA, like it already is doing with United. Don Carty and David Cush fought hard to preserve the Wright Amendment while with American. Now they sing a different tune. I wonder if Mr. Carty, while with Virgin, will some day repeat the tune he sang several years ago: "I don't want to agree to anything that will jeopardize my senior managers".

Any idea why Southwest was neutral on the Wright Amendment for decades? They flourished with the monopoly they had. For decades, SW refused to go head to head against the legacy carriers in many markets. When their growth was finally stunted, they decided to take on more markets.
