You are a couple,no kids. Uptown (just north of downtown Dallas) is very nice for that lifestyle. You can rent down there until you get the job situations cleared away. Then you can decide where to buy. Don't jump off and buy until you get yourself settled.

Commutes can be a PITA, especially with the Horseshoe (i35/45 connector), 635, 35E rebuilds. That is why you should plan on renting at first. Besides, what is great now may lose its luster.

Thanks europeanone, Bombay Doc, gohigher78 and restrain for the suggestions. We will definitely be renting in Uptown so we can to be near nightlife, meet new friends/couples in the late 20's, early 30's and have walkability. Rents of $1200-1500 aren't bad because in NYC you pay $2500-3000/month for a luxury rental. I will be transferring with the same salary in NYC to Dallas, so that will help. My wife will make a little less in the schools, but with the no state/local income tax, that will make up the difference.

We will search the surrounding areas in Plano/Richardson where we can put some work in the house, or new builds in Frisco/Allen/McKinney. We will have to do a "test run" of the commute during rush hour in the AM and PM from the farther from Dallas. Families in Westchester, NY, Long Island, and New Jersey commute 1-2 hours a day and I definitely do not want to mirror that. 30 minute commute would be the best situation. We also want to be near the synagogue on West Parker Road in Plano, probably 15-20 minutes away as we will be new members. Any other suggestions are welcome and we will keep you updated with our upcoming move.
