We are moving to the dallas area and are considering buying a home in Irving/Las Colinas/Valley Ranch vs. Coppell. We have heard good things about North Hills Charter School in terms of academics. Is it really difficult to get a spot? This would be for elementary school. I have heard there is a lottery system. Our child will be at Freeman or Las Colinas Elem. if not into the Charter School.

Is it a better bet to just buy a home in Coppell for the schools?

Appreciate your thoughts.

Las Colinas is in Irving ISD, while Valley Ranch is in either Coppell ISD or Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD (divided by MacArthur Blvd - Coppell ISD on the west side and CFB ISD on the east side, though both very good school districts).

North Hills Charter School is not part of Irving ISD, although it is located in Irving and you are correct, it is based on a lottery system; however, from the admissions info on their website, the period for application for the 2008-2009 school year has already passed (11/01/07-12/01/07 with lottery selections made on 12/07/07). Here is a link to their website: Home

I personally would not choose to have my children in Irving ISD; that said, I would look to buy in either Valley Ranch or Coppell.

I went to Las Collinas Elementary, haha... back when i went the school was Asian majority... We had the highest scores in math in the state for about 3 straight years. CFBISD (which is what Las Collinas is) is a good school district. i'm in high school and I go to Ranchview.
the recent north hills is the best 13th best school in the nation is BS (blue stuffing ) i've had friends go there, all our smartest kids stay. One of my teachers has a kid that goes to north hills ( i actually know her kid, and so she would've had her mom as her teacher which they wanted to avoid) she says the curriculum at the RHS is better, and her child is in all honors.
On the other hand i've had friends go to this school and they tell me how hard it is and how normal class is our honors class. I take my teachers word for it. The selection for North Hills isn't that strict, I am far brighter then my friends (which I know sounds very pompous) and they got accepted, they were each in like 1 or 2 honors classes while I have full honors, straight A's, and in the Gifted and Talented program...and this was in middle school.
CFBISD is more diverse and the IB program which is offered at north hills is coming to Ranchview (which i actually plan to take). Coppell ISD is in parts of coppell and valley ranch, so if you live in Las Collinas then you are in CFBISD.

Actually, Las Colinas (that is also the correct spelling, by the way) is serviced by both Irving ISD and CFB ISD. Here are the maps to both which can be found on each ISD site:

Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD

Hello Ash003,

Yes North Hills Preparatory (they recently changed their name) is difficult to get in. They have a strong academic program and elementary students have a lot of homework. I mean hours worth. For some kids it could be too much pressure.

They only do the lottery if they receive more applications than they have space in a particular grade. However, this happens almost all the time.

If you can't get into NHP, I would recommend Coppell. It is one of the few places in the metroplex that is still experiencing a good property value increase yearly.

Las Colinas Elementary offers IB program and is a Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD school as is Bush Middle school and Ranchview. Ranchview is an IB school as well or will be and I heard recently that Bush is going to have an IB program as well next year. (Hackberry is a major subdivision)

Freeman is an exemplary school and is doing very well for being only 4 years old. It is is in the Carrollton-Farmers Branch School District as well. (housing gets tricky in this area as some of the homes are in Coppell area...you have to research as to which sub divisions are indeed CFB vs. Coppell)

Both of these above named schools have top notch principals that are not only leaders of their school but they study along with their teachers and work along side of the students. Neither of these principals are lacking in the way of quality.

LaVillita Elementary (also CFBISD) will be opening next year and it will be located basically in between both Freeman and Las Colinas. (new housing projects popping up in this area as well)

really where will it be located, My high school is close to freeman and Las Colinas is really close to my house..is there any room? or it that why they're clearing land across from the high school? in any case it would make more sense to build a elementary school farther in Las Colinas as the trip from there to Barbra Bush (which is litterally on the border of Coppell) is a little far.
we should get the result of the IB test later the year, they're so confident they're going to make it they are already debating making it into an academy (a special program in which any kid graduating middle school can come as long as they're in the district) these program are supposed to help you select a career and give you a head start. They competition get rough, as it is sorta of like applying for college except you don't get rejected unless you are really the dull crayon of the basket. They're is already an law academy, a medical academy, an engineering academy, a business academy, and another one i can't remember.
That is another downfall i just remembered these academies will give you child a HUGE boost, and the IB program is to do the same. this Particular area of CFBISD is one of the best. Ranchview is still taking off, but unless you are a senior or junior in high school you should bet fine.
Las Collinas and Riverchase used to be Asian Majority but now everything is about balanced, Freeman is about 50% asian though(wow lol...)... so if you want diversity...haha this is your spot. Laundry is also balanced ethnically... these are all the schools your child would go to if you went to CFBISD.
