If I weren't already sitting down I think I'd fall down. Two of the most powerful men in Dallas have come up with some great proposals, that, if realized, would transform downtown Dallas and the surrounding areas.

"The ideas they presented were bold and progressive."
"[T]he future of our city cannot be tied up in highways."

HKS Chairman, former Trammell Crow CEO say no to Trinity toll road, present vision for I-345 and I-30 | Dallas Morning News

1. "NO" to Trinity Toll Road. (I don't think it will be built.)
2. Tear down I-345 and turn it into a boulevard. (This is even more radical by the usual standards--would really like to see this happen.)

Here is the ugly monstrosity: https://www.google.com/maps/@32.7826...gwaL_YSsUQ!2e0

The "Tear down I-345" idea has been gaining traction for quite some time.

How refreshing, gentlemen. GO FOR IT!

Who is going to pay for this and how much will it cost? TX DOT isn't going to pay.

What? You mean to tell me a bunch of folks heavily connected to the real estate business endorse a plan that would tear down an elevated highway and free up a bunch of primo land near downtown for...wait for it...real estate development? Shocker!

Glad to see this - a return to leaders who actually care and love our city.

IMO I-35 should also be rebuilt like Central Expressway and now LBJ. In sections it could be below grade, with some over pass parks - think what that would do for Market Center or Victory/Design District.

The idea of paving the river as a tollroad to nowhere being dropped will allow tremendous freedom in developing the Trinity into a park.

Having lived in the shadow of that monstrosity, I agree. I hope it gets ripped down.

And bluescreen73 -- YES. And that's a good thing. SUCCESSFUL RE people make a killing because they can adequately identify needs and meet them. Having lived in the shadow of that monstrosity at San Jacinto and Hall (off Ross Ave) I cannot tell you the degree to which that thing is an utter blight on the city.

I'm all for greater street-level connectivity, but have you seen how many vehicles use that connector (I-345)? I can't even imagine the roadway mayhem that would result from its absence. Besides, don't the surface streets and sidewalks still run below it? Is the city not already physically connected?

I agree. All the urban fanatics keep saying traffic will leave once there's no road. Well duh! Except cars don't just disappear. It is a great concept if you live in the city hands down but there's many more people that live outside the city. They will have to travel longer to get from point A to point B. Of course developer will be happy because they get to build more shops and condos with the free land, make money out of nothing. Then you wonder why all the businesses and jobs are going to Plano and North DFW. Who wants longer commute? There's always a compromise

The reason the cars are there is because the highway is there, and the surface streets are underused and faster:
