DMag did a side story time before last on cheap things to do in the different top 10 cities. Ours was very odd.

"If there's no game going on, you can walk to the east end of the complex to find the Maxwell Creek Linear Park, which offers a basketball court, a covered pavilion, a nature trail, and a bizarre enclave of 10 benches arranged in a semi-circle and surrounded by trees. The spot would be relaxing if I weren't so convinced (based on absolutely no evidence) that it's used for some kind of ritualistic sacrifice."

Free (or Cheap) Fun in Murphy, Texas - D Magazine
Uh huh, ritual human sacrifice. So THAT'S why people don't move to Murphy! "quirky", eh? Riiiighhhhttt.

Thanks for the link, checked out the bits near us. Kidlet and I already like the paths through the woods and such in Bob Jones Park, but it's July and a zillion degrees. We may see about the popcorn place but I try to avoid Town Square like the plague (other than Container Store), although with Trader Joe's opening up in a few months I'll get sucked in. And really, cheap things to do: "go to Town Square". SERIOUSLY?!? Heck, after a few hours there I'm ready for some ritualistic human sacrifice.

It's #61 almost at the bottom as usual. Why? Because it has a very high crime rate.

and that's because it has a high ratio of commercial stuff to residential. Lots of people go there relative to the people living there.

Which is another reason these rankings are kinda silly.

Dallas is large enough that there are many differences within the suburbs.

I wouldn't say the list is terrible, but there is much that it doesn't reveal.

Highland Park being #1 makes sense. University Park should be #2.
