Hi,

My husband and I are visiting Dallas in a couple weeks to check it out for possible move early next year from the Midwest. He may transfer with his company which is in N. Dallas, but works at client sites that could be anywhere. I may work remotely and/or possibly in Irving.

So we'd like to check out different areas to:
1. rent an nice apartment for approx 6-12 months (around $1000/mo or less if reasonable w/d in unit)
2. then buy a 3br/2b 1500 - 2000 sq ft home ideally in the $150,000-180,000 range once we know more - do not need a huge yard etc. Not big on maintenance etc.
3. No kids to worry about - so schools etc. not an issue, but would like a neighborhood that we could walk around safely - maybe with a park nearby.

We've been researching things on Zillow etc. and it seems like there are a lot of nice apartments and homes, but not sure where the best (safest) area's are in that sort of budget and how commuting will be.

Also, do most people buy SF homes or are townhouses just as popular?
Is it better to buy an existing home or get into a new housing development (or are they a little too far out?)?

I've read tons of posts here but many have very different needs than ours.

Thanks for any advice you may have.

Dallas is huge including N. Dallas. Which city in N. Dallas your husband will be working? what's your commute criteria?

what size of apartment are you looking?

When you look at Zillow, avoid seeing their Zestimate for houses as they are inaccurate because Texas is non-disclosure state, so sells price are not open to public.

North Carrollton near the Geo. Bush (hwy 191) is pretty good location for N. Dallas and Irving and has pretty reasonable homes and apartments. Also some good linear parks. Look around Trinity Mills Rd.

Thanks Dallas-Cowboy.

My husband's clients could be anywhere so he'll probably have bad commutes at times - his company's office that he might sometimes have to go to is around LBJ & Dallas N. Tollway intersection - not sure what suburb that is - address just says Dallas. Commute for me if I end up in Irving ideally wouldn't be more than 20 miles or so.

Apt could be 1000 - 1100 sq ft or so since we don't plan to be there for long anyway.

We're not really looking that close at the Zestimates - more the list prices they are giving to get a good idea.

Worldklas - we'll take a look at the areas you recommended. Thanks.

Some houses are selling above their asking prices too, BTW.

A realtor can pull reports for you that state what properties actually sold for.

LBJ & DNT is in Dallas, not in the suburbs.
