Just watched episode of House Hunters on HGTV with young couple looking in Dallas in Winnetka Heights--
interesting--was filmed in winter and shown first time in 2013 I think so was repeat--

totally know that show is staged so the two options they also looked at were likely not ever real choice--
one was condo in high rise in downtown--yeah, sure--for people expecting their first child--
and home in Oak Cliff area...

bought the house for 225K--had been remodeled w/o doing anything serious like knocking down wall in kitchen to open it up...was next to busy road too but don't know which one...

always like to see a Texas show on House Hunters since so many are in Chicago or Atlanta, especially lately...

The ones where they are choosing between million dollar condos in NYC and Boston just floor me...

I don't know who writes the scripts but they are so predictable--
and the shoppers' expectations for what they can get for their money are pretty much unreal as well...
all they need to do is search MLS and see what certain neighborhoods are offering for certain price per sq ft...
and the realtors never talk about schools or comps...

I know a RE agent (sort of - not a close friend) who was on House Hunters helping a couple. She said the couple is required to already have a property under contract to be selected and that the other two "choices" are made up after the fact.

This is true, and they don't start filming until the buyers have closed on the house. The other two options are sometimes friends' houses or other homes on the market. They have to get permission from those owners to film and if there's an HOA, they have to get the HOA's permission as well, as they usually shot the community park and other areas. Lots of red tape.

red tape but also advertising--
that is why I thought the condo would agree to be used--
the house in Oak Cliff could have been a relative's or friend's

but anyone who knows Dallas knows that there is 0 likelihood of a young couple w/dog who are expecting a new baby would WANT to move into a condo...
that is just not a Dallas type of mindset...
NYC, Boston, Chicago--yeah--
but not Dallas...

Sometimes the homes that are shown as "options" aren't even on the market at all. Someone we knew has a cabin not far from Denver, and his property was featured as one of the 3 'choices' even though he was not even selling it.....

They always pick the empty house. If you see two with furniture and 1 without, it will always, always be the empty house.

They did a lot of Dallas/Plano/Irving/etc back in 2008-2010 when the rest of the country's housing was much more depressed than Texas, but they actually get a lot of complaints about Texas/GA/FL/etc because the houses are all too similar and too low priced to be aspirational to buyers on the coasts.

That's probably why they picked a highrise condo as one of the choices - to mix it up a bit more.
