I don't plan to drive through the toll on a regular basis, but I would like to have it in the car in case I do need to drive through a toll road once in a while.

My question is, if I just buy a toll tag and put an amount in it, will it deduct over time or does it expire? I.e like if I buy a calling calling card or certain visa gift cards, they have a weekly fee which will deduct a small amount on a weekly basis

There are no fees, and the balance will not reduce except to pay tolls. The accounts do expire if unused. Money deposited in a TollTag account becomes unclaimed property after 3 years of account inactivity. If you don't plan to drive on a toll road at least that often, it probably isn't worth getting a tag. As long as you keep the account active, by paying a toll at least once every three years, your account will be fine and will cost you nothing except the tolls you pay.

I paid $20 to get a sticker and open an account. There's no other charge to my account except for deductions from passing through toll gantries. I don't ever have to pay more money except to get my account balance up. If you don't use the tolls for 3 years after going through one place, you don't have to pay anything for those three years.

Once you put money in though, it's there "forever" (or 3 years until they expire). You can't take it out.
