Cops have had this option for years but prosecutors have continued to push arrests for small amount of pot. Now recommending issuing tickets for pot possession.

Makes sense as jails are overcrowded, and simple possession is not a violent crime. Especially with the trend of legalization of pot.

Our jails are over crowed alright, over crowed with those arrested for pot charges. Prosecutors push arrest because they use it to fluff up their convention rates. States get federal funding for prisons. Then you have private prisons which is big business in the US! This is one reason why folks are heavily invested if keeping pot illegal! The "Three Strike Rule" for example when passed in 13 states resulted in the building of 20 new Federal prisons. People caught with pot tend to get stiffer punishments vs rapist, murders, armed, assault, robbers etc. I'm not talking about some Cartel member busted for hauling a truck load cross the border, I think it's 2 years mandatory for only a few ounces here in Texas and ever longer in other states...like 10+ years for 4 ounces in NY. There was a guy over in FT Worth who killed 3-4 people while drinking and driving and he only got 10 months probation!

I'm not a pot smoker but I'm tied of the BS surrounding it! This needs to stop, they need to legalize Pot. The ban on pot is based on junk science and BS propaganda. Do you realize the first Pot law passed by the US was to require people to grow it!! It's not just some get high street drug. The Hemp is used for lots of stuff, clothing, rope making, paper...the Constitution was written on paper made of hemp! The first flags and US uniforms was made using hemp!

Anyhow, I'm glad Texas counties are at least starting to act on this new law and it hopefully reduces the system making room for real criminals!!

I understand that over half of the US prison population is incarcerated for solely drug-related crimes. I don't know the answer - but the US cannot continue that path. Not only is it hugely expensive for taxpayers, but we are just locking up people that really need drug rehab.

Shouldn't even be a ticket, but it's a start.

Here is an article link: Dallas County may replace arrests with tickets for small amounts of pot | Dallas Morning News

It's about time. One of the candidates for DA in Houston (Kim Ogg), is running on a plan similar to this as well. This has been on the books for years (only Travis County really uses it). Hopefully we see more urban counties in Texas follow this.

On the whole I have no problem with legalizing it... except one. I think it should be illegal to drive a motor vehicle while high, and stiff penalties should be given when caught doing so, just the same as driving while drinking.

Has driving with THC un the blood been proven to be equally as dangerous as driving with alcohol in the blood?

Pretty much right on the money. I haven't heard a single rational reason to keep marijuana illegal - the strongest opponents usually work a field with a vested interest in the status quo, i.e. law enforcement.
