Thank you WorldKlas. Do you know how far these communities are (drive time) from major shopping (Best Buy, Ross, Macys, etc.)? Also are there several school districts close by that my wife can apply to? Thanks again.

All three are surrounded by tons of shopping w/i 10 min drive and school districts everywhere. All there tend to have more newer housing stock and bigger lots. The land is also filled with many trees and the terrain is not as flat as many areas. Good friends just downsized to a 3-car garage, 2500 sq ft brand new quality built house in Lantana (Argyle) for $400K http://www.lantanatx.com

Prosper also has new housing and a great reputation. Its a far northern burb on the east edge. The 3 noted in my prior post are more centrally located.

I see more greenery in McKinney compared to Frisco. Also McKinney has cute downtown area. It is pretty good...

I would lean towards McKinney after that very short visit because of being close to shopping but also McKinney seems to have some change in elevation (however slight) that reminds me of the rolling hills community we are in now. I checked out Rowlett. It seems very nice but it looks like a bit of a drive to go to any major shopping, etc.
Hard to say exactly why, but in our travels around this area (Richardson and north), McKinney seems the "quietest" (west of 75, of course).

Aside from the rolling hills, it seems that the master planning has created a large expanse of "aesthetic beauty" that is not found in such quantity and at such price point as in McKinney. Perhaps also the northern part of Allen/Plano (near 121, west of 75) that share similar qualities and price point.

The large presence of active HOAs also ensure that a much higher percentage of the homeowner properties are well maintained. Traveling southward, neglect starts to show up more frequently.

Anyway, just our observation, not scientific fact, as I'm sure some folks might find exceptions to reference.

Transplanted. Thank you. I will research some of the other cities recommended in this discussion but agree with your "feel" about McKinney.

There's been some good suggestions on this topic however, I personally really like the Lake Country area (76179 zip) just northwest of fort worth. Its located on Eagle Mountain lake with a country club. Hilly, tree lined streets, both new and older homes. Well within your budget and not full of cookie cutter lots/homes.
