Is the Dallas Police Department short of officers right now or do they have a large number of applicants each year? I was wondering if I should sign up after college but the thing is that I have heard the process takes a long time. Some people have told me it takes over a year to be accepted if you have passed the minimum qualifications. Any helpful information for a person looking to be a future Dallas Police Officer. Thanks guys.

They are increasing their force significantly from what I understand. It won't hurt you to apply.

Yeah you're right. They have 2,977 full-time officers. That's not enough for Dallas in my opinion.

DPD is always hiring, and they are always in need of new officers! Many officers join there, go through their academy, work for a year, then quit to go work fo a suburb that pays better and is less dangerous.

They've been pretty under staffed for a few years now. They've gone to great lengths to bring in new recruits. They've had a hard time finding eligible recruits to fill the positions for one thing. DPD Officers are also the lowest paid in the metroplex, and they deal with more than their counterparts in the 'burbs.

Actually, If I get accepted, I wanna go all the way and make it to Detective. But you're right, I'm still gonna try after I get my citizenship in about 2 years.

It is one of the country's finest dept.

They are offering a 10K sign up bonus. They often have these bonuses so may be when you are ready they'll have something similar or better.

If it's such a good Police Department, why are they the lowest paying in the metroplex? Seems like the city of Dallas could spring for some decent salaries for them.

I don't want discourage the OP, but I would never consider DPD one of the country's finest departments. The recruitment process and training is much less rigid than other area departments. I've been through Citizen's Police Academies in two area cities and both have much more stringent requirements than the well-publicized ones of the DPD.

I do know Dallas officers and it appears that there are two kinds of officers in Dallas. Those who truly want to serve in Dallas for whatever reason (family tradition, Dallas pride, lots of promotional opportunity, action) and then those who could (and should) never be hired in another department but got through with drug problems, domestic violence and assault convictions and theft histories. How many officers have been fired from DPD in the last 5 years that had some sort of red flag that they shouldn't have been hired in the first place? That's what makes is frustrating for those officers who are trying to make DPD into that upstanding, reputable department.

It does appear that they are trying to turn that around, but when they are in heavy recruitment mode, their answer is to lower standards. Which is unfortunate on so many levels.

That's not a valid argument. NYPD is the best department in the country and its salaries are lower thand DPD. Think about that too.
