If your perspective is Terre Haute, IN (listed in your signature) you will be in foodie heaven in Dallas. If your expectations are set by Chicago, you will be disappointed by Dallas.

Other than NYC, Chicago is probably the best food city in the country maybe along with San Francisco. I love my hometown of LA, but even though Chicago is less ethnically diverse Chicago is a much more exciting city to eat in. I will say this however, the ethnic variety in Dallas and suburbs is excellent and not that far below Chicago. Chicago, however, has the innovation and the history with excellent eateries that Dallas lacks.

So it should go without saying that if you're coming from Chicago, just about everywhere else in the US will disappoint food wise. Coming from LA and as far as variety is concerned, the Dallas area wasn't that much of a step down. There are a few types of food that are a lot harder to find here (like Filipino), but it wasn't that dramatic. I used to live in Chicago and had I moved straight from there, it would have been more of a step down overall.

I'm into everything depending on area, we have our "go-to" places whenever we are outta town on vacations, etc.. wherever we go we always look for something new and off the beaten path, rarely a chain. That being said, we LOVE the little guys, the ones you'll never even know about unless you ask the locals. Yes, I've been to Chicago & other areas, every area has their own culture, etc.. some with less diversity, but we've found that just about every area has those "secret" places & are sooo good.

True about Chicago, with the caveat that the northern Dallas suburbs are significantly better than suburban Chicago.

For Cajun, try Nate's Seafood and Steakhouse in Addison.

Yes, Chicago: I could go for a slice of pizza from Beggars, and a hot dog or italian beef from Portillo's.

Chili House Mandarin Dim Sum in San Francisco. I also hope to try the French Laundry one day...
