Thanks again for all the input! It's looking like we'll have to adjust our budget and plans to be comfortable and safe, I appreciate the help. We will look into those apartments owned by UTSW and see what we think.

A couple more areas we're wondering about and then I can leave y'all in peace. We found the Coronado Apartments just south of White Rock Lake and north of Tenison Park Golf Course. They seem fairly affordable, is that area okay? If so, how does the commute past downtown Dallas compare to commuting from the western suburbs (My uncle lives in Southlake and drove me to my interview, I was amazed at the early morning rush hour! Is it worse than that through the downtown?

Another is the Tower Village Apartments just south of University of Dallas.

Last one I'll bother y'all with is Westdale Hills apartments in Euless. It's a pretty far commute, but is the area nice enough it'd be worth the drive?

I really do appreciate all the help!

I would be willing to take out loans to not have my family cooped up in a tiny apartment all day long because it's not safe to be outside!!
All very good points.

I don't know a thing about the actual apartments, but it's a good location for a family - close to Lindsley Park - San Mateo Forest Apartments.

The park I think you're referring to is really far from the new apartments near UTSW. Maple has changed a lot in the last few years, there are so many new apartments that have gone up, and a lot of the riff RAFF is getting priced out. In fact, there is a new Starbucks a block from that park.

I agree, that most of the apartments are not really ideal for families, but at least they will have elevators, washer and dryer units, secure covered parking, and the neighbors will be professionals, not convicts.

Your budget is really just too low to find something good. For $1100 - $1200 you can get something really nice. IMO, the extra couple of thousand a year would be money well spent. Student loan interest is low and a couple of grand a year in increased living expenses for peace of mind would be well worth it. The Coronado is running a $299 move-in special, to me that's a dead giveaway it won't be that great. Euless will be a hard drive, but it is a lot more affordable, and there are less safety concerns.

I agree with RonnieinDallas. There is also a Kroger on Maple now.

Also, Maria Luna is not the only park in the area. The one at Hudnall and Cedar Springs is pretty nice. And there are new apartments going up on Hudnall, but I don't think they will be near OP's desired price range.

The program is 3 years- physical therapy. Wow, thanks so much, that is going above and beyond! Thank you. And RonnieinDallas, thanks for your insight, we probably will end up spending more in that range, we just have a hard time giving up our hope of finding something cheaper haha. I think we're realizing we might be on a wild goose chase though.

Big thanks to all of you!
