I guess they are live earthworms washed up into the pool from the heavy wind and rain last night. How do I remove them? They are crawling around in the bottom. I have a 2 wheel suction pool cleaner that automatically cleans up the debris when the pump runs. Will that take care of the issue? Do I need something else to pick them up? I am a newbie in pool care. Any advice is appreciated. My chlorine level is low. I was about to do a shock treatment today. Should I clean them up before I do it or have them killed by the chlorine? Still I need them out of there somehow.

You got a skimmer net on a pole ? Can't wait till you find a live rat or dead rabbit in your pool.

It's best to get all debris out of your pool.

A worm will get sucked into the pool cleaner, no problem. Leaves and such get sucked in all the time with no damage, that's what it's designed to do.

For bigger things... you need the net.

Yes I do have skimmer net and I cleaned up the leaves etc. The pool cleaner sucked up most of the worms though it was kind of tricky to get all cleaned since it was moving on it's own and I couldn't get it directed towards the center where the worms were accumulated. 2 hours work - cleaned most of the worms. Did some shock treatment as well. Needs some kind of barrier to keep the worms away next time.

you may want to consider looking into a pool maintenance company for your first year to learn from them about maintaining proper pool chemistry and maintenance.

You can look into the pool cages used everywhere in Florida but short of sealing it off completely, nothing will keep anything that exists in nature out of your pool. that goes for grass, worms, ants, leaves, flowers etc. Everything that enters the pool will affect the chemical balance of the water so you need to learn how to react and treat the water for each condition. Simply adding chlorine through a shock pack isn't always the answer.
