As for schools: GreatSchools - Public and Private School Ratings, Reviews and Parent Community will give you a run down of demographics and test scores to determine which area is best for your little one.
I love that you've been in the metroplex for less than 90 days , have probably never been to most of the neighborhoods being suggested in this thread, and are hellbent on pushing Rockwall.....a lovely place to live but doesn't meet the criteria OP outlined: proximity to downtown 1st.

Guess what the OP is not keen on? A long commute.

I grew up here. Lived in Lewisville my entire life until I left for college...got my degrees, traveled, and moved back. So lay off with the attitude.

Didn't really realize I was hell bent on anything. Just sharing my opinion which is what the OP asked us for, right?

Lake Highlands area of Dallas is really established and very nice. We also considered that area when searching for commutable areas to Dallas

Not sure what part of Dallas you'll be commuting to, but perhaps Coppell? That might be too far but their school district is very good. My sister lives there and commutes to Irving.

Yeah, and DFW has changed immensely just in the last few years, not to mention from what it was in the late 1990s when I left this area originally. I returned several years ago and barely recognized it. Plus, Richardson is NOTHING like it was in the 90s. I myself wouldn't have ever considered it back then. I was surprised by the regeneration and gentrification of the area...slow, steady, and sustainable. Rockwall's OK, but you have to concede that it can be a horror show trying to get across the lake during rush hour.

The OP is wise to draw a tight circle around home, work, and childcare. Very wise. If there's an emergency, it's always better to be closer to your child than a 30-60 minute drive away.

Plus...speaking as someone who was born and raised in Dallas itself in the 70s, 80s, and part of the 90s...there has always been a sort of antagonistic us-vs-them attitude between Dallas and suburban dwellers, and it's definitely a two-way street. Suburban natives recoil in horror at the thought of living in Dallas, and a lot of Dallasites think civilization ends north of Northwest Highway...or 635 if they're being charitable. A lot of my friends from childhood tease me about living in "Siberia" just north of Belt Line.

Not accusing. Just pointing out some facts.

OP wants to be 15-20 minutes to downtown Dallas, not 20 miles.

15 minute commute AND good schools is tough and really narrows search. That's why I went "outside of the box" a little and suggested areas further out.

It appears to me and probably everyone else that has posted in this thread that the OP is contemplating a job in DOWNTOWN DALLAS.

Sorry. When you said you just moved to Rockwall, it sounded like you just relocated. I remembered your threads about the neighborhoods you were considering in the Rockwall area and never caught the fact you were just moving across the metroplex.
