Hi
We are being relocated with my husband's company. We do have a relocation package and have visited once recently.

Looking at Lantana, Flower Mound, Southlake, Trophy Club. Have a 5 year old. Should we rent first to scope it out and then buy a home?

It seems that nice rentals are a tad hard to come by. I would like to make sure I like the community I am buying in so that is why I may want to rent first and who knows we could build a new home.

Any advice.

Thanks,

We got to Plano from CA in Dec 2013 and decided to rent first instead of buy. The advantages of that is that it allowed us to learn the area a lot better and get a better idea for where we felt we would be comfortable living. If we had bought right away we would have just been guessing, because we had no idea about this area when we first got here. Plus, we had heard so many bad things about the weather and the culture, etc, that we wanted to actually experience it ourselves before committing to staying here. The disadvantage has been that prices have gone up since then, so we are paying more by waiting. Another disadvantage is that you may have to pay a 2 month penalty for breaking your lease early if you don't time it perfectly. We ended up buying a newly built home in Sachse that will be ready next Spring. Overall, I'm glad we didn't rush it. Good Luck.

We also rented when we first moved to Dallas. I love where we live and would rent again if we did this again.
Good luck!

Those are all great areas, but they are not centrally located. Where will your husband's office be located?

We rented as well before we bought. It helped tremendously figure out the right place for us to live.

Thank you so much, I really appreciate it, My husband has a home office so works from home some days and also travels a lot on an airplane to various cities so we can choose any north suburb really. We currently live an hour from an airport so anything will be easier.

Lantana is the furthest away from the airport, and the only way to get to DFW is surface streets with a lot of traffic. Honestly, out of those suburbs, that would be my last choice.

Please, rent first. Find a neighborhood or area that you want to try then rent there, and see if you like it. Gives you time to look at schools, commute times, etc. whole lot easier to get out of a bad rental situation than a bad home purchase.
