I haven't either, though my experience is minimal.

Thanks for all the info everyone. It looks like most have open houses and we were able to setup a few tours, without an application (Providence, ESD & St. Marks). Providence however would not allow us to setup one until January because of the age of our son. They are having an open house tonight, but not children allowed.

It's probably the preschools that you need to pay an application fee to get on the waitlist. For some schools, like a da vinci and meadowbrook, people get on the wait list really early and then tour later. You might need to pay the fee to get on the waitlist (at least you do for da vinci, I never put my kid on the waiting list at meadowbrook b/c I've heard you need to do it really early).

I did tour Alcuin without applying or paying an application fee.

We did some tours two years ago and there were no charges for that. I don't know if it's a new phenomenon.

Meadowbrook you have to take the tour at the same time you get on the waiting list (or pretty close to it). Thus, we toured the school 3 years before my middle child attended.

Generally speaking, when should one start touring preschools and trying to get on the waiting list?

My child hasn't even been conceived yet and I already feel like I'm behind.

I got my middle child on the waiting list the day after birth at Meadowbrook. Sounds crazy, and maybe it is, but it is not unusual.

This seems to be true for some. Meadowbrook and di Vinci come to mind. However some schools even today (with a 2.5 year old) have requested us to call back when he is a little older.
